The Mass No. 2 in G major by Franz Schubert, D 167, was composed in 1815. This is the best known of the three shorter mass compositions which Schubert composed between the more elaborate first and fifth masses. In addition, the later Deutsche Messe or German Mass, D 872, an early Deutsche Singmesse and the ultimate sixth mass would be longer. The second mass, commonly referred to as Schubert's Mass in G, was composed in less than a week March 2 to 7, 1815, the year after his first mass had. Mass No. Schubert, Franz. Menuetto e trio - City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Edward Gardner, Franz Schubert. Although Schubert tried in his final Mass to imbue the text with the same ecstatic energy of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, the music sounds more ironic than ecstatic and more disingenuous than candid. As a result, Schubert's last Mass has been relatively rarely recorded and most of those recordings, no matter how grand and glorious, have always seemed somehow emotionally false. One cannot accuse Rafael Kubelik of being disingenuous. The third and fourth pieces in the first set were published in 1857 although the third piece was printed by the publisher in G major, instead of G as Schubert had written it, and remained available only in this key for many years. The two sets are now catalogued as D. 899 and D. 935 respectively. They are considered to be among the most important examples of this popular early 19th-century genre. Franz Schubert.
