Far to the west and south, in what was then called New Spain and would later be called Mexico, natives and transplanted Spaniards were composing liturgical music of a richness and complexity that was worthy of the greatest cathedrals of Europe - and teaching their native converts to do the same. San Francisco based choral ensemble, 'Chanticleer', perform from their album Mexican Baroque - Music from New Spain and let us see behind the scenes of their is perfection in performance, very much like their British contemporaries, the King Singers. They sing just about anything from Renaissance to jazz, and very well indeed. Incidentally the name Chanticleer is taken from the clear-singing rooster in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The group's personnel varies from time, but usually includes 4 countertenors divided into soprano and alto, 3 tenors and 4 basses, give or take a few.
