Volume Six of The Music of Elliott Carter gives listeners a taste of how drastically Carter's compositional style has changed. The Holiday Overture, composed in 1944, is pure American music and is more than a little bit reminiscent of Aaron Copland. Hints of Carter's later voice are still quite clear as the overture grows in contrapuntal complexity. The first work on the program, however, is the Violin Concerto of 1990. By this point, already in his eighties, Carter had clearly established his own voice and compositional style and the concerto bares little resemblance to. The Four Lauds for Solo Violin alone make this recording worthwhile. His technique is copious, his sound is engaging and multi-faceted, and his emotional output easily runs the gamut between ferocious and tender. Read full description. The Violin Concerto is a concerto for violin and orchestra in three movements by the American composer Elliott Carter. The work was jointly commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony and the violinist Ole Bøhn. It was completed February 26, 1990 in Waccabuc, New York, and was premiered May 2, 1990 in San Francisco, with conductor Herbert Blomstedt leading Bøhn and the San Francisco Symphony. The piece won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Elliott Carter celebrates his 97th birthday on Sunday, and the sixth release in Bridge's ongoing Carter series has been released to mark the occasion. Between the overture and concerto Schulte plays the four solo-violin Lauds, each a commemoration of a performer or composer, and part of the stream of instrumental miniatures that have been interspersed between Carter's major works for the past three decades. Schulte plays them as he plays the concerto: with generous, even tone and precise rhythmic attack, though the recording does his sound no great favours, and in the orchestral pieces adds a few raw edges to the aural picture. Classical music. Violin Concerto, Four Lauds, Holiday Overture. The Violin Concerto 1980 is in three movements Impulsivo-Tranquillo-Scherzando. Not only does this piece reflect the mellowing that Carter's music underwent in the Eighties - where the multi-tempoed instrumental lines are more in convivial dialogue than conflict - but there is also a palpable inspiration from Classical and early Romantic concertos. Volume Six features violin virtuoso Rolf Schultes highly anticipated recording of Carters Violin Concerto, and listeners will surely be thrilled by his electrifying performance. Music of Elliott Carter, Vol. NaxosofAmerica, The Orchard Music от лица компании Bridge Records BMI - Broadcast Music , if you compare the Holiday Overture 1944 to the Violin Concerto 1990 you will be forcefully struck by the greater expressive naturalness not to mention emotional range of the latter work. Now of course, as its title suggests, the overture is a happy, extravert piece in the first place, while the concerto medium implies very different possibilities. The music sounds overly busy, bursting at the seams with contrapuntal and rhythmic tensions yearning to break free of their tonal shackles.
