It was released in Canada on October 5, 2010, by Arbutus Records, and re released in the United Kingdom and mainland Europe in May 2011 by Lo Recordings. The album itself is a cathartic exploration of a space or tone that Grimes has created with influences from medieval music, dark wave, opera, witch house and whale noises. Grimes has grown from her 2010s debut Geidi Primes with something more bass heavy, dreamy and psychedelic. Boucher has referred to it as her medieval album in terms of intent and subject matter. She once explained that the record is meant to be an electronic interpretation of Middle Age Christian reverence, an exploration of sensations beyond earthly experience: I wanted to capture the beauty of being in a beautiful cathedral and hearing reverbed naturally, devotional, vocal music and really believing in heaven and hell. Offering a deeper sense of Grimes' world, Halfaxa's song titles reference Boucher's diverse intellectual interests. Genre: Dream Pop. Halfaxa is unmemorable and uninteresting, only sparking the deep recesses of the mind with its minimal production style and very subdued and lo-fi mood. These seem to be unfinished ideas that drag on for too long, even though the sounds are at least tolerable at points.
