Johann Strauß: Die Fledermaus. Johann Strauss II. Friedrich Haider, Hungarian State Opera Orchestra. Die Fledermaus is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée. The original literary source for Die Fledermaus was Das Gefängnis The Prison, a farce by German playwright Julius Roderich Benedix that premiered in Berlin in 1851. On 10 September 1872, a three-act French vaudeville play by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, Le Réveillon, loosely based on the Benedix farce, opened at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Meilhac and Halévy had provided several. Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus Overture. Upscaled to 720p. Recorded from the BBC on 01 January Fledermaus, his most famous operetta, is primarily loved for what happens before anyone sets foot on the stage: the eight-minute overture is packed full of tunes from start to finish, all of which end up appearing during the course of the action that follows. Vienna had been captivated by Offenbachs numerous operettas. When Strauss, one of their own, began to embrace this musical form, the public was delighted. Strauss himself was at the podium for the very first performance of Die Fledermaus, which took place at the Theater an der Wien on 5 April 1874. Recommended Recording. Illustration: Mark Millington. Die Fledermaus' 1874 no fue un éxito en su estreno y el influyente crítico vienés Eduard Hanslick lo describía como un 'potpourri de valses y polkas'
