Pressure Cookin' is the third album by American singing trio Labelle, released in August 1973. This release was their first and only for RCA Records, and was critically raved due to the songs that songwriter and member Nona Hendryx composed. The album is also notable for being the first album released following lead singer Patti LaBelle giving birth to her only child, son Zuri Edwards she recorded the album while still pregnant with Zuri. to RCA with. Pressure Cookin'. Way ahead of its time, it set the scene for Labelle's pop breakthrough a few years later with their smash hit Lady Marmalade. Pressure Cookin' features nine compositions, many by group member Nona Hendryx, who has been actively involved with this reissue project, along with producer and Labelle manager Vicki Wickham. Stevie Wonder writes one and coproduces two tracks, identified as 'friend' due to his contractual position at the time. Album 1973 9 Songs. A major management / marketing mistake by RCA for 1) the poor recording / mastering of Pressure Cookin', one of Labelle's nastiest, driving disco / soul club classics (raw Patti at her best) and 2) releasing the LP with the short 3:00 7" edit instead of the full length 4:57 version which was eventually released on the Disco Express Vol. 1 compilation LP a couple of years later. For a major and fully-staffed label like RCA with access to top-quality studio equipment and recording engineers, these mistakes are an inexcusable blunder of epic proportions. We can only fantasize about how good a major-label quality recording and release of the full length version of Pressure Cookin' would have sounded on an original LP, and possibly a promo 12" with a heavy-duty disco mastering a couple of years later when the 12" format was invented. What were they thinking, and who the hell was the audio engineer?
