A Listening To Make Time For

The String Trio by Yoshiro Irino
has a duration of approximately:
10:40. It is in one movement.

Instruments and performers
in the Irino String Trio are:

Violin: Saburoh Ueki
Viola: Sumiko Edo
Violoncello: Yoshio Hattori

A superlative performance.

A takara (a valuable thing,
a treasure, or gem stone).

Which is not to say, a
performance with which
I am in complete agreement.

Infact, even as far as
even Schoenberg's and
Irino's own conceptions,
I think the vehicularity
of the expressionism
is misunderstood and
consequently overstated.

The same is true for
Chekhov. Some might say
these comments don't belong,
but they would be mistaken:
it is the question of whether
what is on record, is receivably
conveyed.

Well, anyway:

An excellent performance.
As for the piece, itself:

As a general frame of reference:

The string sound of Schoenberg's
late quartets, and Violin Concerto.

Maybe the musical sound of the
Pierre Boulez Flute Sonatine,
or maybe an acoustico-electronic
tape realization, as by Josef Anton
Riedl. In some ways, maybe even
a bit something like Xenakis'
Pithoprakta, or Metastasis.

Maybe the Schoenberg
String Trio ultra pastoralised.

Not to be misunderstood
to suggest that the music
is not very original, it certainly is.

That is why I am not sure
of what to relate it to.

Yoshiro Irino's String Trio
has an authoritative stamp,
and a satisfying organization
of changingness.

A compendious kaleidoscope
of fascinating string trio sound.

With the caveat above,
regarding the classification:
A listening, to make time for.

_____________________________

Maybe a trick for listening
to music like this, is to, when
one hears a harmonic or
melodic fragment that one
associates with a feeling,
reject the feeling, and
re-associate the harmonic
or melodic fragment with
a colour.

Likewise, when one hears
an articulation or dynamic,
that one associates with a
feeling, reject the feeling,
and re-associate the
articulation or dynamic,
with a topography.

Thus, rather than feelings
(usually unpleasant ones)
of a human narrative,
instead, descriptions of
landscapes of various
colours, altitudes, and
shapes.

(Obviously, an expressionist
interpretation, tends to lead
listeners, in the other, and
an unhappy, direction.)

The Hidden Track

I have picked up
a couple ticks
at the beginning
of the String Trio.

Of-course, my equipment
is shabby, and I am just an
average record handler,
and the turntable's location
provides a poor sight line.

Still, the cue does not seem
to leave much margin for
error, and the String Trio
has acoustical delicacy.

The previous track
appears to have a
substantial winde down
(I have not listened to it),
and I have had success
pre-queuing the cue.

To make that more clear,
I have set the needle down,
expecting to catch the last
notes of the previous piece
(in order to protect the Trio),
but got silence.

(Now, however,
I will have something
to look forward to,
if I ever listen to the
preceding piece:
some clicks, to let me
know it is over.)

Ticks or clicks:
is there a difference?

______________________________

As a side note,
this is a recording of
music for STRINGS, by:

Motohiko Adachi
Joji Yuasa ("Johji")
Yoshiro Irino ("Yoshiroh")

The cover, however,
I insist unwithdrawingly,
has the immediate appearance
of a beautifull, colourfull
abstraction of the complexities
of the keywork of WOODWINDS.

It would be nice to know
where this cover came from.

It seems like I've seen it before.
Somewhere. Probably just all that
dreaming of buying it.

Is this a dream?
